Vaccines for Kittens & Cats

Regular vaccinations give your cats and kittens a robust immune system that prevents diseases. Our team at Bridgwater Veterinary Hospital and Wellness Centre is here to assist you in giving your pet a healthy life with the help of vaccines. Our hospital provides all the vaccines that are required by law: leukemia, rabies and FVRCP. It is important to understand that our veterinarians treat each patient individually and so vaccines are heavily dependent on your pet’s risk factors such as age, lifestyle and overall health. When should I have my cat or kitten vaccinated?

All cats regardless of lifestyle need (e.g. if they are indoor or outdoor cats) need to receive their full set of vaccinations especially when they are still young. Kitten vaccinations generally begin at 6-weeks-old.

• 6 to 10 weeks: FVRCP (Panleukopenia, Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus)
• 11 to 14 weeks: FVRCP and Feline leukemia
• 16-weeks-old and over: Rabies, FVRCP and Feline leukemia

Adult cats are vaccinated one year after completing the kitten round of vaccines. Some cats may need FVRCP, feline distemper, rabies and leukemia shots.

What should I expect when my cat/ kitten is vaccinated?

Vaccines play an important role in your pet’s health and have a small chance of showing side effects. Some cats experience side effects but pet owners don’t need to be alarmed unless they persist for more than two days. Here are some side effects to look out for:

• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite
• Fever
• Swelling where they received the vaccine
