Pet Surgery

Dog with veterinarian who just had surgery

Watching your animal undergo surgery is stressful no matter how small or large the surgery may be. At Bridgwater Veterinary Hospital & Wellness Centre, our team relies on a combination of extensive clinical experience and state-of-the-art equipment and technology, along with a caring team, in order to develop some of the area's top veterinary surgery.

Common Conditions Managed & Treated With Pet Surgery

At our vet hospital, we use state-of-the-art surgery equipment to treat conditions including:

  • Trauma-related injuries: broken bones, lacerations, hematomas
  • Foreign object ingestion
  • Orthopedic surgery: tendon repairs, hip dysplasia corrections, joint replacements, arthroscopies, patellar luxations
  • Dental surgery: tooth excision
  • Cancer-related surgeries: tumor resections and removal

How to Prepare Your Animal for Surgery and Why You Should Choose Pet Surgery at Our Veterinary Clinic

If your animal is scheduled for pet surgery, our veterinary team will answer all your questions beforehand about the procedure. Generally, we'll ask you to refrain from giving your pet any food or water at least 12 hours before the scheduled operation in order to prepare for anesthesia. You may want to bring a warm towel or blanket to make your pet's ride home more comfortable, and in the days following the operation, we may ask you to restrict your pet's activity level.

You'll need to be sure your pet doesn't lick or scratch its incisions (if any) and keep an eye out for any signs of anesthesia complications. Fortunately, these are rare, although it's generally normal for your animal to be a little groggy for a day or two as the anesthesia wears off.

In the event your animal needs emergency surgery, of course, it's not possible to feel fully "prepared" for it as a pet parent. But where our team excels in expertise, we match in compassion. We do everything we can to  answer your concerns and treat both you and your pet with the respect and dignity you both deserve during an unexpected stressful event.
