Causes of Pet Dermatology Conditions

So, you notice something is up with your pet's skin. Do you know what's causing it? There could be a variety of triggers or underlying medical conditions. Here are a few that we see the most at our clinic:

  • Hormonal imbalances (e.g., Addison's disease, Cushing's disease, or hypothyroidism)
  • Allergies (allergic dermatitis); can be caused by food or an environmental trigger (smoke, household chemical, pollen, etc.)
  • Medication use
  • Sunburn
  • Fleas, mites, and other parasites
  • Bacterial or viral infections

How Our Vet Dermatologist Treats Animal Skin Conditions

Correct diagnosis is essential to treating dermatological conditions in pets. Our vet dermatologist team carefully selects tests and measures that will be individually appropriate for each animal that comes to us with a skin issue. Through a combination of lab work, physical examination, and history taking, we'll be able to pinpoint the cause and contributing factors of your pet's symptoms, which then allows us to deliver customized and accurate treatment.

Depending on your pet's unique situation, we may treat his or her skin condition through one or several methods:

  • Nutritional changes and/or supplementations
  • Oral and/or topical medications
  • Medicated shampoos and rinses

If there are any secondary or additional medical issues that come about as a result of the pet's skin issues (including flea infestation, infection, or anemia), we'll also be sure to provide treatment for these concerns, as well.
