Pet Ideas and Care From Our Winnipeg Veterinarian
With the 4th of July right around the corner, our Winnipeg veterinarian here at Bridgwater Veterinary Hospital & Wellness Centre thought now would be a fitting time to review some pet ideas and safety tips for this upcoming time of celebration. Unfortunately, our office tends to see an increase in certain pet injuries and ailments around this time of year, but the good news is that there are steps all pet owners can take to protect their beloved pets from common Independence Day hazards!
Pet Holiday Safety Tips for 4th of July and Beyond
The 4th of July is a dangerous pet holiday for numerous reasons. For starters, many pets (such as dogs and cats) become very frightened by fireworks. Some pets will respond to this by running away from home, which in-turn puts them at-risk of being struck by a car or otherwise harmed. The best way to protect your pet if he or she is scared of fireworks is to create a "safe space" in your home where your pet can stay for the duration of loud firework celebrations. If you must let your pet outside during this time, make sure he or she stays on a leash.
If you're hosting a barbecue or other holiday party, make sure to keep all food out-of-reach of your pet! Pets that get ahold of meat bones, desserts, and other "human" foods can become seriously ill. Some foods, such as chocolate, are even toxic to dogs and cats.
Finally, if temperatures are high this 4th of July, make sure your pet has plenty of opportunities to rest indoors and away from the heat. Provide your pet with plenty of fresh water and shade while outdoors to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
