Travel Tips From Our Winnipeg Veterinarian
If you'll be embarking on a road trip in the near future and plan on bringing your pet, our Winnipeg veterinarian would like to provide you with some practical travel tips. Following these tips can make your trip as enjoyable and stress-free as possible for both you and your beloved pet.
Preparing for Pet Road Trips: What You Need to Know
Pet road trips can be fun, especially if you have a pet that enjoys car rides and exploring new territory. Some pets, however, don't do as well in the car. Ultimately, you know your pet better than anyone. If you're worried that your pet may be stressed out during your travels, it may be better to leave your pet at a boarding facility or at home with a pet-sitter checking in.
If you plan on bringing your pet with you, make sure he or she is in good health. If it's been more than a year since your pet's last health and wellness exam, schedule one with our veterinarian. This is also a good opportunity to make sure your pet is up-to-date on all vaccinations, and that he or she is microchipped!
You'll also want to make sure you have all the right supplies packed up to make your road trip as comfortable as possible for your pet. This includes packing plenty of food and treats, water, toys, and bedding. Your pet should be given regular opportunities for food, water, and potty breaks. When taking your pet on a potty break, always keep him or her on a leash and make sure your pet is wearing identification tags! If traveling with a smaller pet, such as a cat, keep him or her in a hard-sided crate during transport.
