Cold Weather Tips for Pets This Winter
Winnipeg winters can be chilly. Are your pets protected from the cold? The team at Bridgwater Veterinary Hospital and Wellness Centre in Winnipeg wants to remind owners about taking care of and paying extra attention to pets’ needs during the colder months, in an effort to keep them healthy and happy.
Some Cold Weather Tips for Pets from a Veterinarian in Winnipeg Include the Following:
Watch Out for Dry Skin
Coming in and out of dry heat, such as in and out of a home, can cause dry skin in pets. Keep your home humidified when possible.
Keep the Coats On
Don’t cut your dogs' hair too short during winter months, as their fur provides them with much needed insulation and warmth. If they naturally have shorter coats, consider a snug-fitting sweater to keep them warm.
Clean Off Paws
Wipe and dry your pets’ paws with a clean towel after walks outside. Check between their toes for salt or ice.
Skip Baths
Skip the bath during colder weather when possible. Bathing removes oils from the skin, which may cause itchy, irritated, and dry skin.
Feed a Bit More
Pets need a little more fuel in colder weather. Feed them a few more calories in winter months to keep them active and comfortable.
Keep them Comfy
Provide your pet with a warm, cozy bed all year round. In winter, make sure they have their own warm blanket and pillow, too.
If you are cold, your pets are cold, too. Leaving pets outside in the cold can cause them to become disoriented, lost, injured, and in the most extreme temperatures, cause them to die.
