Pet Car Accidents: Care at Our Winnipeg Veterinarian
It's the one thing no animal lover wishes to experience: A pet being hit by a car or the animal being inside the vehicle during a collision. The moments following can be frightening and even a blur. As soon as you are safely able, seek vet care. As an emergency veterinarian, Bridgwater Veterinary Hospital and Wellness Centre has the equipment and experience to provide your pet with the immediate assistance required in this critical situation. For pet car accidents, care at our Winnipeg veterinarian starts as soon as you walk in the door and continues until we have done everything possible to help.
What to Do After a Pet Car Accident
Try to remain calm after a pet car accident. First, seek safety for you and the animal. Then, access the situation and provide CPR, if necessary. Even a normally gentle cat or dog can become aggressive during trauma. You may need to muzzle the animal with a sock, leash or T-shirt. Never muzzle an animal having difficulty breathing. If possible, wrap the pet in a blanket and carry it to safety. A blanket can also act as a splint to assist a larger dog. Finally, call our Winnipeg veterinarian, tell us as much information as possible, and we will be ready to take over when you arrive.
Emergency Vet Care
Our Winnipeg veterinarian staffs a trauma team to efficiently evaluate, test and treat an animal after a car accident. Emergency vet care can include diagnosis through radiological imaging and blood work. We will access the head, bones, ligaments, and organs for trauma and make sure your pet is able to breathe without difficulty. If needed, we can provide oxygen, administer antibiotics and pain medications through intravenous fluids, and conduct emergency surgery. We will repair any wounds or fractures and help your pet to rest comfortably under observation.
