Importance of an Annual Pet Exam

Pets tend to hide illnesses and pain extremely well, which makes it important for you to take your pet to the veterinarian for a yearly exam. An annual exam helps extend the life of your pet and ensures they stay healthy. If you live in the Winnipeg area and need to schedule an appointment, contact the Bridgwater Veterinary Hospital and Wellness Center for more information.

How Often Should My Pet See a Vet?

Depending on the size and breed of your pet, they will age anywhere from five to seven years for every human year. Because the life span of your pet is so short, it’s important to pay attention to preventative care to help your pet fight disease and stay healthy. Younger animals should visit the vet at least once per year, while those nine and over should schedule a visit twice per year.

What to Expect During a Wellness Exam?

If you’ve never been to our office before, our veterinarian will ask for a complete history of your pet. Afterward, we will check your pet’s vital signs, including temperature, pulse, and respiration rates. A complete physical exam will be given to notate the condition of the skin and coat, the teeth, the ears and the overall condition of the body. Your veterinarian may also perform some routine blood tests, fecal exam, and urinalysis.

After the exam, your veterinarian will make recommendations on diet, dental care, and behavior management. If your pet needs any vaccines or additional care, those will also be given at this time.

Why Are Wellness Exams Important?

Through routine wellness exams, we can help identify any illnesses and diseases that can affect your pet. Early detection of a disease means a longer lifespan and a healthier pet.
